Former Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Andrew Chafin has agreed to a one-year, $6.5 million deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. The deal has the ability to increase to $7.5 million with incentives.
Chafin is a pitcher that was rumored to have been of interest by the Cubs as they continued to search for another reliever ahead of Spring Training. Instead, Chicago decided to sign Michael Fulmer, a former teammate of Chafin, to a one-year deal.
Considering that Chafin was the top left-handed reliever on the market, it comes as a surprise that he only received a $6.5 million contract. That could leave open the door for the Cubs to further add at the position if salaries continue to be suppressed following the Chafin deal.
Matt Moore, Brad Hand, and Zack Britton are all still available and should come at a more team-friendly deal than Chafin.
